Students Club

The Citadel Theatre believes that young people are integral to the artistic fabric of our community, and we are committed to programming and initiatives that develop their creative voices and encourage their participation. Students Club offers a unique glimpse into the world of professional theatre to a wide range of local junior and senior high school students. Prior to select performances of each of our main stage shows, members gather for a light supper and then participate in a highly engaging, interactive presentation with one of our region’s talented theatre artists, covering some aspect of theatre – from choreography to design, from stage combat to Shakespeare. Following the performance, students stay for an informative talkback with members of the production’s cast and crew.

Prior to Students Club performances of As You Like It, students will enjoy an interactive workshop with Patrick Howarth.

Patrick is a certified fight director with Fight Directors Canada, and currently serves as the president of that association. Patrick has been choreographing and teaching stage combat since 1999. He has worked with most of Edmonton's professional theatre companies, creating fights in many styles. He regularly teaches in the BFA Acting program at the University of Alberta, as well as a number of national and international events, including the Paddy Crean Workshop, The FDC National Workshop, and the World Teachers Conference.

Through the workshop, students will learn how Fight Choreographers use movement and angles to create the illusion of combat onstage. The students will learn the essential elements of stage combat, including safety and respect, and will better understand how Actor Combatants work together to tell physical stories.
