Noises Off - Sept 13, 2007
Maclab Enterprises Students Club News
October 16, 2007
By Vern Thiessen
Directed by James MacDonald
Hello Students Club Members,
Despite several set backs and complications, the run of Noises Off was tremendously successful. It was well-received by audiences and critics alike, and a great start to the season.
Next up is the world premiere of Vimy. Set in a military hospital during World War One, Vimy is a personal look at one of Canada’s greatest military triumphs through the eyes of five young men who were on the battlefield. Written by Edmonton’s own Governor General Award-winning playwright Vern Thiessen, this play will take you back to a time and a place in Canadian history that should not be forgotten.
Following is the Students Club agenda for Vimy.
PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL TIMES HAVE BEEN PUSHED BACK HALF AN HOUR
6 PM – Food
For the production of Vimy we will be meeting:
- In the Zeidler Lobby on October 23 & 24, 30 & 31, 2007
- In the Rice Theatre Lobby on November 6 & 7, 2007
Food is included in your package. Pop and water will be available for $1.
Remember to bring loonies as we do not keep a lot of change on hand.
6:30 PM – Pre-show Presentation
Props
Creating props for a show is not as simple as going to the store and buying whatever you need. Sometimes props are needed that don’t exist anymore, so the props master or mistress needs to recreate them using old photographs. Sometimes a prop has to behave in a particular way, and so the props department has to work its magic, ensuring that the needs of both form and function are met. Join us as we talk with Angie and Vince, two of our props magicians here at the Citadel.
See the Vimy show page for more information.
7:30 PM – The Performance
Over to the Maclab Theatre to see the show. Run time is approximately two hours.
After the Performance – TALK BACK

BEHIND THE SCENES
The characters in Vimy represent a truly cross-Canada gathering — and so does the cast! Just like the characters in they play, the young men playing the parts are themselves from right across the country, making this play a truly pan-Canadian production.
As you will see, the set of Vimy is really down and dirty — literally! The Citadel had to bring in truckloads of soil to create Bretta Gerecke and Narda McCarroll’s earthy set design. Stage hands water the soil nightly to keep it from becoming too dry and dusty; they also have to weed it every day or so. Who knew that stage lighting could substitute for sunlight!
