The Robbins Academy at The Citadel

Message from Bob Baker and Penny Ritco

on being a part of the first-ever
Student Sponsorship of a new
Canadian play at the Citadel

Hunchback

In the upcoming season, the Citadel will be partnering with Edmonton’s Catalyst Theatre for a world premiere of Hunchback in March 2011. Conceived by Jonathan Christenson and Bretta Gereke, this adaptation of Victor Hugo’s novel promises to be as inspired as the Catalyst productions of Frankenstein and Nevermore. Hunchback is in the early stages of script and music development, with dramaturgy, workshops and readings still to come. We believe it would be an exciting and invaluable learning experience for students to participate in the play development process and would like Students Club members to be the first to benefit from this new initiative.

We are asking each Students Club member to make a $20 contribution towards the sponsorship of Hunchback — to take it from the page to the stage. We are hoping for 100% participation which would raise an incredible $20,000. In addition, to support this initiative and encourage Students Club members, we are working to secure matching funding from a corporate sponsor.

Sponsorship will be applied to the substantial but critical development costs associated with premiering a new work, including the playwright and composer commissions, dramaturgy, readings, workshops, and design development. In return, Students Club members will be invited to attend a workshop presentation in the Fall of 2010, receive development updates, meet the cast, and get a special memento from the play.

This is also a great opportunity to learn about entrepreneurship and philanthropy. By supporting the development of Hunchback, Students Club members will be able to witness the result and impact of their investment, not only with the premiere in Edmonton, but also in the future life of the production. Catalyst productions of Nevermore and Frankenstein have gone on to runs in Toronto, Vancouver, London, and New York and we believe Hunchback will enjoy the same success. Maclab Students Club will be credited as the sponsor on all future productions. Members can watch their investment reach thousands of audience members during the play’s lifetime and know that they were a part of making it all happen.
