“Now that we are together, everything feels better...?
Simon and his twin sister Janine have been summoned to the notary's office to hear the last will and testament of their mother, Nawal. Each is handed an envelope to deliver to someone they didn’t know existed. And so the mystery begins.
The letters send them on a journey into their mother’s past, to a country engulfed in civil war, where she was a political activistand later became a prisoner of war. Through poetic language and startling imagery, the play connects the origins of these three members of a family in shocking and unforgettable ways.
“Five Suns out of Five.”
“…this marvelous cast [as they] carried us into the darkest corners of the human spirit. I could spell out single performances but with a cast this big and this good, where do you start?” –Colin MacLean, Edmonton Sun“All [director] Rose’s actors are nothing if not intense. You’ll have gone through a war zone with them by the evening’s end.” –Liz Nicholls, Edmonton Journal
“This is a Canadian classic-in-waiting that stares into humanity's darkest corners and doesn’t flinch or succumb to despair… This haunting work may be the best piece of theatre this country has produced this millennium.” –J. Kelly Nestruck, The Globe and Mail
“A beautiful, compassionate, lyrical and ultimately reconciliatory piece of theatre.” –The Globe and Mail
“Scorched is a gift that will touch your heart.” –Toronto Sun
“Intelligently stimulating, politically relevant.” –Stage and Page
I’ve been haunted by this play since I first read it a year ago. We are proud to present this award-winning production and extraordinary cast as they conclude their national tour.” –Bob Baker

A Citadel World Premiere Presentation
Meet James. Seven years old, he has escaped to a fantasy world where he is being raised by wolves. Every day is a new adventure until, frightened they are on the verge of becoming extinct, James and the wolves concoct a plan to save themselves. Extinction Song is a funny, tender and heartbreaking account of a child’s way of coping with the troubled world around him.
The world premiere of this play by local director and playwright, Ron Jenkins, Extinction Song features a tour de force performance by Edmonton actor Ron Pederson. It promises to take you on a roller coaster ride of emotions that will leave you with as many questions as answers.
“Your laughter and your tears – and there will be both – are legitimately earned here. “To lose a precious fantasy is to lose an individual self, and join a flawed, sad, punitive species. It seems to be our shared tragedy by the time the curtain comes down.”
–Liz Nicholls, Edmonton Journal“Don't miss Extinction Song.
“It's about the poetry of words and movement, the brilliance of an actor, writer and director to take us back and forth between this world and some parallel dimension whose beauty makes this mundane life totally worthwhile.” –Graham Hicks, Edmonton Sun“When you develop a new work you never know how it will go. When you present a staged reading of a new work in progress and it totally captivates the viewers, you know you have a hit. This is a hit.” –Bob Baker
Winner of two 2009 Elizabeth Sterling Haynes Awards for Outstanding Production of a Play and Outstanding New Play.
