The Citadel has staged over 15 world premiere productions over the past decade. As part of our mandate we are committed to producing two world premieres each season.
The Citadel has produced five world premieres by its Playwright in Residence Vern Thiessen. Mr. Thiessen won the 2003 Governor General’s Award for Drama for his play Einstein’s Gift, first produced in the Maclab Theatre in February, 2003. Several of Mr. Thiessen’s productions which premiered at the Citadel have gone on to further production around Canada and internationally.
For the 2008/2009 season the Citadel will produce four world premieres: Tom Wood’s adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, Marty Chan and Robert Walsh’s The Forbidden Phoenix, Ronnie Burkett’s Billy Twinkle: Requiem for a Golden Boy, and Ron Jenkins’ Extinction Song.
The Citadel Play Development department is actively pursuing scripts for development at the Citadel. We are particularly interested in the work of senior Canadian playwrights whose work has been previously produced in a major Canadian theatre. We are also interested in the work of emerging playwrights whose work has been produced in smaller theatres.
We do not accept unsolicited manuscripts. If you are a playwright with a script in development, and you are interested in submitting it for further development and potential production at the Citadel, please contact James MacDonald or Wayne Paquette prior to submission. We will respond after considering whether the play fits our guidelines.
With initial queries please include:
- A resume, complete with production histories of produced or developed plays
- An indication as to whether the play is or has been in development with any other play development centre or PACT theatre
Thank you for your interest in the Citadel Theatre
