Brian Dooley

Mr. Dooley has participated in many workshops and development projects for new plays for a variety of organizations including Playwrights Workshop Montréal; Factory Theatre in Toronto; The Banff Playwright’s Colony; The National Film Board; and Le Centre des Auteurs Dramatiques (CEAD) in Montréal.Early in his career Mr. Dooley was Associate Dramaturge and Director of the Young Playwrights Program at the Playwrights Workshop and has been a guest instructor at various colleges and universities across Canada. Mr. Dooley maintains a long-standing relationship with the National Theatre School in Montréal having been involved as an instructor and coordinator for many years. From 1990-94 Mr. Dooley led the Directing and Self-Start Programs of the National Theatre School and was an Acting Instructor from 1983-94. His passion for mask work led him to direct the acclaimed National Film Board film Pierre Lefebvre: On Acting. The film profiles Mr. Dooley’s legendary and inspiring instructor and mentor, Pierre Lefebvre. Mr. Dooley has conducted many masks workshops in both neutral and character mask and returns annually to the National Theatre School to teach mask.  

As former Vice President, Creative, for Great North Productions/Alliance Atlantis, Mr. Dooley oversaw the creative development and production of various projects. As a producer for Great North Productions, he was also directly involved in both documentary and drama production and development. His many credits include The Things We Do For Love and Who’s On Top both of which he created for LIFE Network; The $100 Taxi Ride for National Geographic; The Canadians for HISTORY Television; the dramatic television series Jake and the Kid for Global; as well as several programs for Discovery Canada; Discovery Health US; Food Network; BBC; National Geographic; TLC; S4C (Wales); CBC; Global; and CTV

Before embarking on a career as a producer Mr. Dooley was involved primarily as an actor, director, and dramaturge in both television and theatre. He received a Gemini nomination (Best Supporting Actor) for the internationally acclaimed drama, The Boys of St. Vincent; a Dora Mavor Moore (Toronto) award nomination; a Betty Mitchell (Calgary) award nomination; and an Elizabeth Sterling (Edmonton) award nomination for Outstanding Performance in The December Man (L’homme de décembre) a World Premiere co-production at the Citadel Theatre and Canadian Stage during the 2007-08 season. He received Betty Mitchell Award nominations for his performances in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf at Alberta Theatre Projects (Calgary) and has been honoured with two AMPIAs (Alberta Motion Picture Industry Awards), one for best performer and another for best production under 60 minutes, for the CBC drama pilot The Beat. Mr. Dooley also received a New York Festivals award nomination for the documentary To A Different Beat.

Mr. Dooley has a diploma from the National Theatre School (’80; Leo Cicery Award recipient), and is a graduate of Bishop's University (B.A. Honours, Drama ’77; O.B. Thornton Scholarship recipient).
