Ghosts haunt a man and woman, continents apart, as they discover secrets of their past. Featuring gumboot dancing, scenes in Xhosa, a South African click language, and an elaborately designed set, Ubuntu brings the best of South African and Canadian theatre together in a harmonious production that will allow you to examine your own roots.

Ubuntu soars in the mountains. It truly offers insight into why we are on this Earth, why we are cursed/blessed with a yearning for ubuntu.
Belonging to a common humanity is what Ubuntu, both in the making and performing, is all about. In that, it’s vivid, it’s startling, and it’s eloquent.

Mbulelo Grootboom is an award-winning South African actor who has appeared extensively on the stage and in film and television. He appeared in Hamlet for the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-on-Avon and in Antigone for South Africa’s Baxter Theatre. His film credits include a role in Alex Hailey’s epic series Roots, and he appears in season three of Outlander.

As an actor, David has performed leading and supporting roles in theatres throughout Canada and the U.K., including Canadian Stage, Tarragon, Mirvish Productions, Soulpepper, Stratford, Shaw, MTC, and The Peter Hall Company in the U.K., among others. Most recently, he played John Major in the Mirvish production of The Audience at Toronto’s Royal Alex Theatre. He is very happy to be making his Citadel debut.

Erin is an actor, singer, and musician and is so honoured to be joining this production of Ubuntu. Andile Nebulane received his training in Theatre and Performance at the University of Cape Town. He is a South African actor who has worked onstage, in film and television internationally. Theatre credits include Truth in Translation (HIRA), Reach (Sweden), Things are Bad (Baxter Theatre). Television credits include Igazi, Keeping Score, Rhythm City, Hustler, and ER.

Tracey works across Canada and internationally as an actor, playwright, choreographer, and director. For the Citadel: Lindsey in Clybourne Park, Una in Blackbird, Peter and the Starcatcher (Choreographer), Chelsea Hotel: The Songs of Leonard Cohen (Creator/Director), and The Jungle Book (Playwright). Local credits include: Stray (Workshop West), A Midsummer Night’s Dream & Henry V (FreeWill) and Living Shadows: A Story of Mary Pickford (FTA). Her play GLORY will premiere with Western Canada Theatre and Alberta Theatre Projects in the spring.

Daryl Cloran is the Artistic Director of the Citadel Theatre, the former Artistic Director of Western Canada Theatre (Kamloops, B.C.) and founding Artistic Director of Theatrefront (Toronto). Directing credits include: Love’s Labour’s Lost (Bard on the Beach), Liberation Days (Theatre Calgary), Mary Poppins (Persephone), Tribes (Canadian Stage), And All For Love (National Arts Centre), Generous (Tarragon), Afterplay (Shaw Festival), and the international collaborations RETURN (The Sarajevo Project) and UBUNTU (The Cape Town Project). Daryl is a proud new resident of Edmonton, where he lives with his wife, Holly, and their sons, Liam and Jack.

Lorenzo is an award-winning set, costume, and lighting designer who has contributed to 12 seasons with Soulpepper Theatre Company, six seasons with the Stratford Festival, and many regional and independent theatre companies throughout the country. He’s the Director of Design for the Soulpepper Theatre Company and a graduate of their inaugural Academy. Recent notable credits for Soulpepper include set and lighting design for Of Human Bondage (Dora Awards for set and lighting) and co-creator and production designer of Cage , both of which recently debuted in New York City at the Pershing Square Signature Theatre (Soulpepper on 42nd Street). He holds an MFA from the University of British Columbia and is a member of the Associated Designers of Canada.

Previously for the Citadel - Crazy For You and The Drowsy Chaperone.

Christian Barry is an award-winning director and theatremaker from Halifax, where he is artistic co-director of 2b theatre company. Christian has directed shows that have toured nationally and internationally, including: Old Stock: A Refugee Love Story (National Arts Centre, Edinburgh Fringe), The God that Comes (PuSh, Tarragon Theatre, Pittsburgh International Fest, Noorderzon, Aarhus), and Revisited (WorldStage, Theaterformen, PuSh). Awards include: Herald Angel, Scotsman Fringe First, Dora Award (Best Production), Merritt Awards (Outstanding Direction, Outstanding New Play, and Outstanding Lighting Design). Christian is a two-time nominee for the NS Masterworks award, received the 2008 Halifax Mayor’s award for an Emerging Artist, and the 2006-7 Urjo Kareda residency grant at the Tarragon Theatre.

For the Citadel, costume design for Mary Poppins and The Kite Runner. Costume credits include Louis Riel (COC), The Physicists and The Three Musketeers (Stratford), The Testament of Mary and Incident at Vichy (Soulpepper). Set and costume designs include An Octoroon (Shaw), King Lear and Stuff Happens (NAC); The Road to Paradise and Night (Human Cargo), Million Dollar Quartet and Hand to God (RMTC); Seminar (RMTC/Mirvish), Hirsch (Stratford). She is a graduate of York University and the recipient of three Dora Mavor Moore awards. Gillian is currently designing A Christmas Carol (RMTC), Charlie Brown (MTYP), Idomenus (Soulpepper), Long Day’s Journey into Night (Stratford), Stage Kiss (Shaw) and Hadrian (COC).

Patrick is very happy to be involved with Ubuntu and its fantastic company. Past fight director credits at the Citadel include Julius Caesar,Shelter, After Juliet, Noises Off and Muncha Buncha Munch. Other recent shows include Coriolanus and As You Like It for Free Will Players and the Suburban Motel series for Punctuate Theatre. Patrick has choreographed many dozens of shows in Edmonton’s large and small theatres, and for television shows such as Caution: May Contain Nuts and Mentors. He is currently the president of Fight Directors Canada.

Deborah’s acting credits include six seasons at the Shaw Festival and six seasons at the Stratford Festival, most recently playing Katerina in Taming of the Shrew and Marina and Thaisa in Pericles. Her other credits include productions with Soulpepper, Acting UpStage, Tarragon Theatre, Manitoba Theatre Centre, Mirvish, Theatre Passe Muraille, and many of Canada’s wonderful regional theatres. She plays Catherine Cardinal on the CTV crime drama series Cardinal, currently shooting its third season. Upcoming, Deb will be playing Goneril in Groundling Theatre’s production of King Lear. She is so happy that Ubuntu continues to be shared with theatre lovers.

Holly is an actor/writer who has worked extensively in theatre and film. Originally from Toronto, Holly has worked with Tarragon Theatre, Canadian Stage, Factory Theatre, Soulpepper, Grand Theatre (London), Western Canada Theatre, The Arts Club and Neptune Theatre, among others. As an ensemble member of Theatrefront, she was nominated as a co-writer and performer for the international collaboration Return (The Sarajevo Project) and for her performance in Tribes. Holly is currently working on a novel for young adults and developing an epic, circus-inspired play which she workshopped in Brooklyn with a German Wheel expert. She is now a proud resident of Edmonton with her family.

Michelle is an award-winning actor based in Toronto. She has recently returned from a critically acclaimed Off-Broadway run of Soulpepper’s Spoon River and Of Human Bondage. Selected credits include The Heidi Chronicles, Eurydice, Angels in America, Ghosts, Parfumerie (Soulpepper), The Lesson (Modern Times), Butcher (ATP, Why Not Theatre, Theatre Centre), Ubuntu, Little One, Waiting Room, Generous, The Valley (Tarragon Theatre), The Russian Play (Factory Theatre), The Diary of Anne Frank (Neptune), The Glass Menagerie (Canadian Stage, Segal Ctr), Blasted (Buddies), The Mill (Theatrefront), Hamlet (NAC) Caesar and Cleopatra, R and J, Love’s Labour’s Lost (Stratford). Michelle is co-creator of 2B’s award-winning Revisited.

Michael recently completed his MFA in Directing at the University of Alberta, adapting and directing Ibsen’s The Lady from the Sea. At the U of A, Michael directed his own adaptation of Hamlet, as well as A Moon for the Misbegotten, Ice Cream (Act I), And Tell Sad Stories About the Deaths of Queens, and assisted on The Inspector General. He directed a workshop of Meg Braem’s Vital Spirits with WWPT, and is currently collaborating with Kenyan writer Mukonzi Musyoki on a new work. Upcoming, Michael will direct Really, Really at the University of Toronto.

This is Katherine's first time at the Citadel Theatre and she's very grateful for the opportunity.
